Wilton Charley (Diné/Hualapai)

A master of pencil art whose work captured the essence of Navajo identity, culture, and storytelling. Born and raised within the sacred lands of the Navajo Nation, Wilton’s early life was steeped in the in the traditions, stories, and values of his people. He discovered his talents for art at a young age, using his artwork as currency to trade for ice cream and treats, using pencil as his medium to create strikingly detailed and emotionally resonant works.

Wilton’s art was deeply inspired by the landscapes of the Southwest, his intricate pencil sketches brought to life the strength of Navajo elders, the grace of ceremonial dancers, and the beauty of everyday moments within Navajo communities. Through his work, Wilton bridged generations, inviting viewers to connect with the rich narratives and enduring spirit of Navajo life.

The Wilton Charley Legacy Art Scholarship

A $5,000 annual award created to honor the life and work of Wilton Charley by supporting the next generation of Native artists. This scholarship is open to Native American students who demonstrate artistic talent.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be an enrolled member of a federally recognized Native American Tribe.

  • Must provide documentation of at least 1/4 tribal blood quantum.

  • Must be pursing a degree in arts, including but not limited to fine arts, graphic design, or traditional arts.

Purpose and Vision:

The scholarship is designed to support Native Artists in achieving their educational and creative goals while fostering cultural preservation and innovation. Recipients of the Wilton Charley Legacy Art Scholarship will receive not only financial support but also a unique opportunity to contribute to their community.

Upon graduation, scholarship recipients are invited to collaborate with CODETLKR on a limited-edition art collection. This initiative allows them to showcase their work, elevate Indigenous voices in the arts, and give back to the community by sharing their creative talents.
